End Mills for Aluminum: 2-Flute vs 3-Flute Carbide Guide
May 29, 20266 min czytaniaAutor: Solid Carbide Direct

A buyer and machinist guide to choosing 2-flute or 3-flute carbide end mills for aluminum CNC machining.
End mills for aluminum should be selected around chip evacuation first. Aluminium can stick to the cutting edge, form built-up edge and damage wall finish if the cutter does not clear chips fast enough.

2-flute vs 3-flute for aluminum
| Choice | Best fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| 2-flute end mill | Slotting, pocketing, high chip load and roughing in aluminium. | Maximum chip space but less edge support than 3 flutes. |
| 3-flute end mill | Profiling, finishing, wall finish and higher rigidity in non-ferrous work. | Better finish and stiffness but less chip space than 2 flutes. |
| 4-flute end mill | Limited finishing use only when chip load and evacuation are controlled. | Usually not the default for aluminium because chip space is smaller. |
