A practical CNC buyer guide comparing carbide, HSS and cobalt drill bits by material, rigidity, hole quality, tool life, cost and production fit.
Many buyers search for HSS, cobalt or carbide drill bits as if the choice is only about hardness. In CNC production, the better question is whether the drill, machine, holder, coolant and work material can work together repeatably at the required hole tolerance and cost per hole.

The cheapest drill is not always the lowest-cost drill. For repeat CNC work, cost per hole and downtime matter more than unit price.

- You run CNC production with stable spindle, holder and coolant conditions.
- Hole tolerance, position consistency or surface finish affects the next process.
- You machine stainless steel, cast iron, hardened steel, titanium or abrasive materials.
- Tool changes and downtime cost more than the price difference between HSS and carbide.
When HSS or cobalt still makes sense
- Maintenance drilling, hand drilling, repair work and unstable clamping conditions.
- Very low-volume jobs where tool life is less important than flexibility.
- Machines that cannot support the rigidity or cutting speed needed by carbide drills.
